Government Crap

by Bryan Strawser · Sep 20, 2002

And we wonder why most governments never get anything done…

Phil Windley uses his weblog to get the truth out.  It’s funny and profoundly sad to see how government works.  Everyone I know that works in government knows that the civil service system is fatally flawed.  It makes it impoosible to fire people.  That in turn results in people that don’t follow directives.  It also makes it extremely hard to hire experienced people from the outside instead of promoting average producers from inside the system.  One story I heard recently was how an irate civil service employee used a complaint to their congressman to prevent the elimination of a multi-million $$ a year project that was an absolute disaster.  Of course, that probably is something we could live with under normal circumstances, but this happened to be part of our national defense against terrorism.  No wonder that Bush wants to eliminate civil service rules for the homeland security department.  On that, I agree with Bush. WPM?

by Bryan Strawser · Sep 20, 2002

I took the test.  I type 98 words per minute on my Sony PCG-R505JL SuperSlim Laptop’s Keyboard…  I bet I’m faster on the natural keyboard at home…

How fast can you type?. The results are in. Your typing speed: 48 WPM. As someone who types reasonably fast and very accurately, I’m always amazed that so many computer users can’t touch type, particularly since the relatively small amount time required to learn the skill offers such an enormous return on investment. In 1987… [Jonathon Delacour]

Gotta have it.

I need this today!

iPod for Windows. It’s been a long wait, but the iPod for Windows is out! Jack Schofield of the Guardian grumbles that there it there isn’t a USB 2.0 version, and that iTunes hasn’t been ported to the PC, but those are small quibbles with what is without doubt the best designed digital audio player on the market. Just be glad that Apple deigned to release a version for the rest of us anyway. Read Amazon… [Gizmodo]
